CHAPTER 6
Not All Hurdles Are on the Outside
Extreme self-trust and do you look funny on your horse?
The back-seat barrier
Past as a precursor
The blame game
Whale talk and the Jonah complex
Not all barriers to a situation will be due to external factors. There is a rich world of inner barriers that contribute to untenable situations. These inner barriers and the beliefs that sustain them must be addressed to make progress. This chapter describes the surprising inner conditions that are related to untenable situations.
Extreme Self-Trust and Do You Look Funny on Your Horse?
You can’t lead a Calvary charge if you think you look funny on a horse.
—John Peers
Not only does high performance require vision for the future, it also requires belief. Lack of belief can cause people to slow down, quit, or never even try. Lack of self-trust can cause or perpetuate untenable situations.
An overconcern with looking funny can also shut down our creativity. It can keep us hugging the trunk of the tree instead of venturing out on a limb. Some of the most enjoyable aspects of life are the result of someone not being constrained by the fear of looking funny.
I am glad that John Denver was not shy about his thankfulness for being a country boy. Aren’t we glad that Jim Henson was not too serious to play with puppets? Think of the millions of people who would not have enjoyed the escape to the magical world of Harry Potter if J. K. Rowling had dismissed her stories as just “silly” and hid them away.
Aside from the few examples of awful singers trying out for big-time TV talent shows, most people do not suffer from too much trust in themselves. In fact, it is quite the opposite: the vast majority of people underestimate themselves. The majority of people are not jumping up and saying they should be president, or governor, or mayor. The majority of people are not even pushing themselves forward to be leaders in their own circle.
Just as most people could be two times more assertive and still come across as nice people, most people could still be two times more trusting of themselves and still be well within the realm of reality. They need to get more extreme about their self-trust.
In the case of people with little talent trying out for the TV talent shows, the world will clearly tell them they are not very good. Judges will tell them. They will not get invited to sing on stage for money. People will not want to listen to them even for free. If they can improve their craft with singing coaches or get more experience, that would be great, but if not, reasonable people will see their level of talent and make some decisions.
For most of us, though, we’re just in the area of normal work and life. Our talents (or lack of talents) are not so immediately drastic or apparent. What is apparent are the opportunities that are lost for people just because they are afraid of looking silly.
